For sale: Government set to offload 5 bn High Speed Rail Link
The UK’s first and only high speed rail link is set to be put up for sale by the government as part of measures to reduce the budget deficit.
The 68-mile route from London to the Channel Tunnel in Folkstone cost 5bn to build but has been labeled as one of the government assets scheduled for sale. The auction of the link is expected to raise around 1.5bn for a 30-year lease.
The successful bidder will be offered the rights to operate the route as well as ownership of HS1 Ltd.
The route would be independently regulated by the Office or Rail Regulation to safeguard the interest of passengers.
High Speed 1 is the first next-generation railway to be built in the UK and connects the Channel Tunnel to St Pancras in North London. The line uses 140mph Japanese-built ¥“javelin¥” trains which cut journey times between the capital and Ashford in Kent from 1hr 20 minutes to 36 minutes.
