Serial kidnapping of women occurred in southern part of the Korean Peninsula in the late 1930s. The Korean traffickers used deception and force to traffic innocent women to Korean brothel operators in Manchuria and China. The following are some of the well known incidents.[1][2]
Kim Bok-sun Incident[edit]
Kim Bok-sun (김복순 金福順) was the leader of a human trafficking group that kidnapped 28 young women inDaegu and its vicinity. They sold these women to Korean brothel operators in Seoul and received up to 150 yen per woman. The traffickers were all arrested.[3]
Ha Yoon-myung Incident[edit]
Ha Yoon-myung (하윤명 河允明) was a prison guard at Daejeon Prison. He quit his job in 1932 and started human trafficking with his wife. The first woman they deceived was a 18-year-old in Daegu. They told her parents they needed a babysitter and paid 10 yen. Then they took her to a Korean brothel operator in Tianjin, China and sold her for 1,000 yen. For the next 7 years they used similar deceptive methods to traffic over 150 women to brothels and made over 60,000 yen. They were arrested on March 14, 1939.[4]
Bae Jang-eon Incident[edit]
From 1935 to 1939 Bae Jang-eon (배장언 裴長彦) and ten other men trafficked over 100 women to brothels in Manchuria and over 150 women to brothels in Northern China. They deceived women in the farming villages. It was revealed that low-level officials cooperated in forging the documents. They were arrested on March 27, 1939. This incident was also called second Ha Yoon-myung Incident.[5][6]
Kim Ok-man Incident[edit]
Kim Ok-man (김옥만 金奥萬) and his family started human trafficking in 1935. They pretended to adopt over 100 young women in the farming villages and instead trafficked them to Korean brothel owners in Manchuria. The traffickers were arrested in Manchuria.[7]
Choe Myung-ho Incident[edit]
Choe Myung-ho (최명호 崔明湖) and her partners confined 16 women in her house in Seoul and forced them to engage in prostitution. The women who tried to run away were brought back and beaten day and night. One of the women made it to the police station and reported the situation.[8]
Kim Il-sung Incident[edit]
Kim Il-sung (김일성 金日成)“s group kidnapped 140 civilians in the early part of 1940. He later became the leader of North Korea.[9]
Kidnapping Incidents Afer The War[edit]
Kidnapping of women continued after the war in South Korea.
A trafficker who kidnapped two young women was arrested on April 10, 1956.[10]
A trafficker who kidnapped an innocent girl from a farming village was arrested on July 10, 1956.[11]
A female trafficker who kidnapped and sold an innocent girl to a brothel was arrested on August 5, 1959.[12]
