韓国の「Deathの経験」学校は、うつ病を持つ人々を助けることを目的

Korean ‘Death Experience’ school aims to help people with depression

With suicide rates in South Korea more than double the global average, one school is on a mission to help people overcome depression and other mental health problems.

Seoul Hyowon Healing Center organizes “death experiences” that allows people to have fake funerals, with the aim of making them realize the importance of life.

According to a 2014 report by the World Health Organization, more than 800,000 people commit suicide annually globally. South Korea has had the highest suicide rate among high-income countries for the last eleven years. In 2012, 17,908 people committed suicide in the republic, almost double the number compared to a decade ago.

Seoul Hyowon Healing Center is hoping to assist in lowering the grim statistic. Here, people are made to dress up in traditional white robes and sit in a wooden coffin. They are then required to listen to a short talk on how to accept the difficulties of life delivered by Jeong Yong-mun, a former funeral worker and also the head of the healing center.

The participants are then required to write a letter to loved ones. The next step includes reading those letters aloud. And when it’s time for the “hour of death,” they need to lie in the coffin holding their “funeral portrait” a photograph traditionally placed in coffins with the deceased and then the lid is put on the coffin with them in it. The participants spend 10 minutes inside the closed coffin and are encouraged to ponder over their life.

When they “come back” to the real world, Yong-mun says he mostly gets positive reactions from the participants – with most of them expressing hope about the future.

And that is what the Center is trying to accomplish. In a highly fast-paced, competitive world, it hopes to give people the time and environment to reflect on distress in their lives that may otherwise result in suicide. Some experts believe that the nation’s super-competitive atmosphere is responsible for increasing depression and suicide cases.
